Acids and Bases Notes

Some acids are made by living things.
The acid in vinegar is ethanoic acid.
The mineral acids are nitric acid, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide are examples of alkalis.
An acid turns blue litmus paper red.
An alkali turns red litmus paper blue.
The pH scale is used to measure the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution.
When an acid reacts with an alkali a neutralisation reaction takes place.
Neutralisation reactions have a wide range of uses.
Acid rain can form naturally.
Air pollution can cause acid rain.
Alkalis can be used to prevent acid rain.
